"Extinct" Bird Seen, Eaten

February 18, 2009—A rare quail from the Philippines was photographed for the first time before being sold as food at a poultry market, experts say.

Found only on the island of Luzon, Worcester's buttonquail was known solely through drawings based on dated museum specimens collected several decades ago.

Scientists had suspected the species—listed as "data deficient" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's 2008 Red List—was extinct.

A TV crew documented the live bird in the market (above) before it was sold in January, according to the Agence France-Press news agency.

Michael Lu, president of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines, told AFP the bird's demise should inspire a "local consciousness" about the region's threatened wildlife.

"What if this was the last of its species?" Lu said.

However, the buttonquail is from a "notoriously cryptic and unobtrusive family of birds," according to the nonprofit Birdlife International, so the species may survive undetected in other regions.

What if that was the last of its species? I cant help but remember that news about the Philippine eagle that was shot and eaten last year by a farmer from Mindanao:

The story of what happened to one juvenile eagle in the southern Philippines has received
widespread attention.

The remains of the bird were found in a national park two weeks ago.

The eagle had been rescued from captivity in 2006 and reintroduced into the wild in March
this year with a tracking device.

When wildlife officials noticed that it had not moved for some time they began a search and
found its skeleton and the transmitter under a tree.

A 22-year-old farmer, Brian Balaon, later came forward to say he had shot the eagle with an
air gun and had eaten it with his friends. He said he did not know it was an endangered
species.

But the Philippine environment secretary has called for the farmer to be punished severely
to show that the authorities are serious about enforcing the wildlife protection laws.

If the farmer is found guilty he could be jailed for between six and twelve years.

It's just frightening to know how much Filipinos are unaware of the plight of these endangered species. Hmmm...

A CALL TO ALL LASALLIANS: The Tradition of Singing the Alma Mater Hymn

Let us bring back the traditional way of singing our Alma Mater Hymn every after the UAAP game or anywhere. In collegiate sports (specifically when La Salle was still in the NCAA), La Salle was the first school to do an alma mater hymn after every game that started in the mid 60s. The reason for this is for the opposite crowd to go out from the game venue first to avoid a possible meet-up scrimmage after the game.

The traditional way of doing our Alma Mater Hymn is by raising our clenched fist throughout the Hymn and pumping it only on the last three words of the hymn (HAIL! HAIL! HAIL!).

Let’s bring back the traditional way, Lasallians!

The Rainbow Bridge


There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow
Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge
there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always
food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are
young again.  Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all
day with each other.

There is only one thing missing. They are not with the special person who
loved them on Earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes
when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears
are up!  The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group!

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take
him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again
and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be
separated.

Connie and I lost one of our pet guinea pigs this morning... Congee.  We found
her this Christmas morning lying helpless in their cage with a nasty bite wound
on her neck.  She was probably bitten by Crinkles the other guinea pig.

Okay. hre i am ranting again. Tonight is actually the first time this term that i'll be staying up for an assignment. 92 pages to read.. 5 pages of crap work ..err.. summary to do.. and about 4 hours of sleep.. Okay okay.. i should have started with it yesterday. Maybe im just to lazy. Hey, but on the otherhand, well, actually, im from gox, and i am in my senior year. Cramming should be very innate to me. I am not lazy. I am just being practical. haha =p

No light + No TV + No PS + No Mystery Case Files + No iPod + No DVD marathon = kill-yourself-before-boredom-does

Imagine spending almost 36 hours without electricity.. Well that is something i had to endure when the storm hit manila last week. I never really enjoyed the four day weekend since there is pretty much nothing to do in the house since there is no gaddamn power. I just kept myself busy by teaching my sisters how to play poker (B.I. mode haha) and reading some books i bought from the Book Fair last month. Power went back only yesterday evening. Thank Gawd! Well, school starts tomorrow again. Well for sure i'll be hearing tons of typhoon and blackout stories hehe..
